Growing your Corporate "Family"

Finding good staff is one of the hardest parts of any business. If you've set things up right, you shouldn't need to start worrying about staffing etc. until after you've already grown the business enough that you were able to quit your old job and work full-time on the business, and have now grown the business to the point that even working full-time isn't enough to get everything done yourself (or maybe you don't want to work full-time, and prefer just delegate all the jobs off to someone ASAP, so you can spend more time relaxing).

First of all, before finding staff, you might consider the idea of getting your partner, or kids, to work for you. Many people say that you should always keep business and family separate, however, if you delegate jobs correctly, you should never have any problems. On the contrary, keeping the money in the family means you share in more of the company's profits, and also you know you're working with someone you can trust. In addition, it means you're both free to work your own hours, and that you can be together most of the time, which is always a plus. Because spending more time with the ones you love is probably one of the main reasons for starting your own business in the first place!

When you do finally decide to start hiring staff, there are many places you can look. Especially in these economic times, there are thousands of jobseekers out there. The key though, is to find staff who you are best suited to work with. Before hiring, always ensure that your staff have the right skills, or at least the right attitude for the job. They should always be honest, hard-working, and reliable. If you can find staff who share your vision, or your passion, that's also a big plus. There are also other things to consider like: do they live nearby, what is their marital status (a married employee with kids has a lot more need for job security etc., so they're more likely to stay for the long-term) etc...

Employing staff also requires a lot more paperwork for your business - payrolls, PAYG withholdings, Workcover, SUPER payments etc... Before hiring any staff, be sure to contact your Accountant and discuss everything which needs to be done beforehand.
